PSHE

Personal, Social, Health, Economic Education (PSHE) enables our pupils to become well rounded, informed young people who will be able to cope in the 21st century.

PSHE is a National Curriculum subject it contains several specialist and statutory areas. The main areas of specialism are: Citizenship, Careers, Drug Education, Economic Well-being and Financial Capability, Emotional Health and Wellbeing, Staying Safe and Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE), which also includes Healthy Eating/Healthy Lifestyles.

As a school we wholly agree with these statements by The Chief Medical Officer of the Department of health that underpin our aims, vision and values in PSHEE:

“It is vitally important that all children and young people have access to good quality PSHE in schools that supports their developmental goals and enables them to successfully negotiate health risk behaviours and develop positive personal attributes… PSHE at school is an important part of the way in which schools can contribute to improving resilience and health among children...”


Evidence shows that well-delivered PSHE programmes have an impact on both academic and non-academic outcomes for pupils, particularly the most vulnerable and disadvantaged. PSHE association

Key Stage Three and Key Stage Four

PSHEE is mainly delivered through tutor time, impact days and lessons in Year 7, 9 & 11. The department aims to provide a wholly inclusive spiral and thematic curriculum allowing for development of knowledge relevant to the age and stage, which will contribute to pupils’ personal, social development and wellbeing; PSHEE is not just the formal curriculum, but also upon extra-curricular activities, clubs and responsibilities, partnerships with the local community, links with external agencies; helping to contribute to a positive school ethos.

Through-out years 7-11 PSHEE addresses issues such as:

  • Transition e.g from Primary, 16+
  • Mental health including resilience, self-worth and aspiration
  • RHSE (see below for more details)
  • Respectful relationships
  • Drugs – including alcohol, tabacco and vaping
  • Healthy eating/ physical activity
  • Protected characteristics
  • LGBTQ+ equalities and inclusion
  • Economic Wellbeing and Financial Capability
  • Safety - including Esafety and First Aid
  • Careers, work-related learning and decision making/ options
  • Citizenship and British Values

RSHE Relationships, Sex and Health Education

RSHE focuses on giving our pupils the information they need to help them develop safe, healthy, respectful relationships of all kinds.  At RHSC Safeguarding our pupils is at the heart of everything we do so RSHE is about the physical, emotional and social development of our pupils, keeping them safe in the modern world. RSHE involves learning about relationships, sex including sexual health, sexuality including diversity and personal identity, healthy lifestyles, emotions and signposting.  RSHE will be delivered through Tutortime, PSHEE lessons and ‘impact’ off timetable sessions delivered by school staff or outside agencies. Signposting and support for pupils and parents

As a department we believe that we should make our pupils feel as supported as possible and informed so that they can make the right decisions in their life.
There are many outside agencies that we work with and signpost our pupils to including;


Citizenship

Citizenship Education helps to enable children and young people to make their own informed decisions and take responsibility for their own lives and be part of their communities. It aims to raise awareness of their own, and other people’s, rights and responsibilities as citizens including both the social and political world. Citizenship Education highlights issues such as the welfare of others, and allows young people to be knowledgeable and articulate in reflecting upon their opinions and arguments, helping them to become increasingly active and responsible in their communities, supporting them in realising their capability of having an influence on the world. Citizenship Education assists schools in promoting the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty; furthering mutual respect, appreciation and harmony between people with different faiths, beliefs, cultures and traditions. Citizenship is taught across the curriculum and excellent cross curricular resources and links are made whenever possible during 'Special days' for example Harvest Festival, Election times, Black History Month and every year for Remembrance with a service and international links.
