Humanities

The Humanities subjects help students to develop an understanding of the world in which they live and therefore we believe that they play a central role in the school curriculum.

We have a strong dedicated team who are all passionate about their subjects.

Key Stage Three

Geography & History

Year 7

In Year 7, pupils receive three hours a fortnight of both Geography and History teaching. Pupils will be taught in mixed ability groups.

Year 8 and Year 9

In Year 8 and Year 9, all pupils are taught in mixed ability groups. Pupils receive four hours a fortnight of both Geography and History teaching.

Religious Education

Year 7 and Year 8

In Year 7 and 8, pupils receive two hours a fortnight of specialist RE teaching. Pupils will be taught in mixed ability groups.

Year 9

RE is an option choice for pupils in Year 9. They are taught in mixed ability groups and will receive four hours a fortnight of specialist RE teaching.

Key Stage Four

Taking History or Geography is a compulsory requirement at GCSE. Pupils have the option of choosing either subject or both if so desired. Pupils are taught in mixed ability groups over the two years.

Geography

In Year 10 and Year 11, pupils receive five hours a fortnight of GCSE Geography teaching.

Exam Specification: AQA – Geography A (8035)

History

In Year 10 and Year 11, pupils receive five hours a fortnight of GCSE History teaching.

Exam Specification: Edexcel - History A GCSE (1HI0)

Religious Studies

Religious Studies is an option subject at GCSE. Pupils are taught in mixed ability groups and receive 5 hours a fortnight of Religious Studies teaching.

Exam Specification: AQA - Religious Studies A GCSE (8062)

Key Stage Five

Accommodation and Resources

The Humanities department is made up of six rooms (two Geography, two RE and two History) and all are equipped with interactive whiteboards. Three of the classrooms also contain a set of PCs for use within the department. A-level lessons are taught in the Sixth Form building. The Humanities department have a wide range of resources for pupils to access and we work closely with the library to give pupils the best access to information to support their learning.

Extra-curricular Activity and Trips

This is an area that the department are very enthusiastic about. We believe that pupils’ learning should extend beyond the four walls of our classrooms and we endeavour to provide our pupils with opportunities to enhance their learning through a range of fieldtrips and visits. The opportunities open to pupils in different years, include:

Geography:

  • Year 7: Ranworth Broad
  • Year 8: A coastal study of Overstrand
  • GCSE: All students much take part in compulsory fieldwork; ne day at Sheringham and Cromer for Physical fieldwork and one day at Norwich city centre for Human fieldwork. An optional trip to London, Stratford is also available.
  • Year 12/13: London Docklands regeneration study, Southwold study, a residential trip to Iceland and residential trip to Berlin

History:

  • Year 9: Ypres Battlefields (with our German partner school).
  • Year 11: Crime and punishment in London.
  • Year 12: An opportunity to visit the UEA and experience lectures from History professors.
  • Year 13: A residential visit to Berlin.

RE

  • Year 7: Walsingham trip
  • Year 10: Exploring Christian beliefs and practices trip to Walsingham
